5 Things to Check Before You Send Your Next Campaign |
You triple-checked the email copy, hit send, and then… noticed a glaring typo in the very first line. Sounds familiar? You're not alone. Email mistakes like that happen more often than we'd like to admit. It can make you look unprofessional and even affect your conversions. That's why having a foolproof testing checklist before hitting send is essential. In this edition of the Idealetter, we'll discuss five important things you should check before sending any email campaign. |
| #1: Dark mode compatibility | More people are using dark mode to read emails. And if your emails are not optimized for dark mode: • Text can become difficult to read. • Black logos can disappear into the background. • Some colors that get inverted in dark mode can make the email difficult to read. So, to make sure your emails render well in dark mode, you should: ✅ Use transparent PNGs, so they blend well with both light and dark backgrounds. ✅ Add lighter-colored outlines to logos. They ensure the black logo remains visible against dark backgrounds, as shown in the image below. | | ✅ Preview your email in both light and dark mode by sending it to yourself or your team members. ✅ Use tools like Dark Mode Checker to see how your email looks in partial or full inversion dark mode. |
#2: Spelling and grammar mistakes | This one sounds obvious, but you would be surprised how often it's overlooked. Even a small typo (especially in places like the subject line, intro, or CTA) can hurt your credibility. Here are some ways to catch mistakes before sending: ✅ Read your email slowly and out loud to spot awkward phrasing or missing words. ✅ Ask a colleague to review your email - a fresh set of eyes can catch what you might miss. ✅ Use text-to-speech tools like NaturalReader or Apple's built-in “Speak” functionality to have your email read aloud, allowing you to catch mistakes. ✅ Use tools like Grammarly, Quillbot, or Google’s built-in grammar tool to scan your email template and identify issues.
| #3: Image size and display issues | If images are too large in file size, they load slowly or may not load at all. If they are too small, they'll look blurry or pixelated. To avoid such issues: ✅ Compress large images using tools like TinyPNG or Iloveimg to reduce size while retaining quality. (Ideally, size should be under 100kb) ✅ Always add alt text, not just for accessibility but also as a backup in case images do not load. ✅ Test how the images look when the email is viewed on a mobile device. It could be too small or too large, and the text within them might not be readable. |
#4: Broken or missing links | When a potential customer clicks on a link, it indicates that they are interested enough to take the next step. However, when that link doesn’t work, you lose out on a potential sale. Some tactics to avoid broken links include: ✅ Send test emails and click every link yourself to double-check they work and lead to the correct page. ✅ Use email tools (like Mailmodo's template suggestions) that can automatically check for broken or missing links while you build your email, as shown in the example below.
#5: AMP and HTML fallback | If you’re sending AMP emails, note that Gmail, FairEmail, Mail.ru, and Yahoo Mail support it. All other email clients will show people the HTML fallback of your email. Therefore, it's crucial to ensure both the AMP and fallback versions look good and function properly. Here’s what to pay attention to: ✅ The colors in the AMP version should match the HTML fallback version, especially for buttons and clickable text, to maintain a consistent look and feel. ✅ All AMP forms, games, and other elements should have HTML alternatives that render in all email clients. ✅ The copy of both versions should be carefully reviewed to ensure that no text is missing, duplicated, or cut off in either version. And also ensure it works with the overall template's copy. | | If you're using Mailmodo to send your AMP email, you should also check the email in Apple Mail. In Apple Mail, our emails remain interactive in the HTML version, so test to ensure the interactive email renders as intended. |
