What is an email design system?
Email Design System (EDS) is a collection of blocks, modules, and templates pre-built with brand guidelines that you can reuse to create any template in minutes.
They are like the Lego blocks of email design.
Click, tap, click again, zoom, tap, and be done.
Hours and sometimes days saved.
This way, instead of starting from scratch every time, you have a pre-built and ready-to-go framework optimized for maximum impact.
Why have an email design system?
Having an EDS set up for your brand can be helpful because it can:
1. Improve design consistency to increase brand recall
EDS helps you establish guidelines for the design elements of your email templates, ensuring that all your emails have a consistent look and feel.
And this consistent use of your brand color, fonts, etc., can reinforce your brand identity and increase brand recall, helping your audience remember your brand when they encounter it in other contexts.
2. Saves time creating emails
Brands usually spend days creating a single email campaign, but with a standardized EDS, they can save time, create one in a matter of hours, and also reduce human errors in the email creation process.

How to create your own EDS?
Now that you know what it is and how it helps, let's learn how you can build your own EDS.
Step 1: Determine the layout
It's important to balance design elements and white space to create a visually appealing email layout. Experiment with different layouts —single column, double column, hybrid, etc.— to select one that aligns with your branding.
Step 2: Choose a style
Pick an email style that aligns with your brand and the message you want to convey.
✨Clean: Uses light colors for the background and dark colors for important elements.
💃Bold: Uses bright, eye-catching colors, fonts, and design elements.
🌸Pastel: Uses soft and muted colors to create a gentle and inviting tone.
🟨 Geometric: Uses shapes and patterns to create a modern, minimalist look.
📼Retro: Uses vintage design elements such as old-style fonts and illustrations.
Step 3: Standardize the typography
Select 1-2 email-safe fonts to use in all your emails and the size for different text types like headings, paragraphs, etc. Here are the recommended font sizes to be used in an email:
Font Family
Font Size
H1
28px
H2
24px
H3
20px
H4
18px
Paragraph
16px
CTA
18px
Step 4: Create blocks which you use repetitively
Save blocks that you repeatedly use in your emails, like header, footer, CTA, or social share block, to streamline your email design process.
Ensure these blocks have your brand’s chosen colors, typography, etc., to remain consistent across all your emails.
